Abstract
This study explores the impact of vortex generator (VG) configurations on heat transfer performance and flow resistance in a tube under forced convection conditions. Four VG designs were analyzed: plain tube (baseline), triangular vortex generators (TS), zig-zag triangular vortex generators (TwZ), and perforated zig-zag triangular vortex generators (TwP). Numerical simulations were conducted using ANSYS Fluent, focusing on the prediction of Nusselt number (Nu), friction factor, and performance evaluation criteria (PEC) to assess heat transfer enhancement and flow resistance. The results show that vortex generators significantly improve heat transfer, with the TwP configuration exhibiting the highest Nusselt numbers, indicating a 2.5 times enhancement compared to the plain tube. The TwZ and TS configurations also show improvements in heat transfer, with the TwZ offering a 2 times increase in heat transfer efficiency. While all vortex generator designs increase the friction factor, the perforated design (TwP) reduces flow resistance more effectively than the solid TwZ. The study also incorporates a grid independence study to ensure the accuracy of the results. In conclusion, vortex generators, particularly the TwP configuration, provide an optimal balance of heat transfer enhancement and flow resistance reduction, making them highly beneficial for applications in solar air heaters and heat exchangers.
